Making shapes??????
Sleeping???
Building a tower?????
What are these kids doing??? The answer...building the recycling symbol using only their bodies!! We have been learning about recycling the past couple of days, so I decided to just do a quick fun activity with building the recycling symbol. Let me tell you.....it was HILARIOUS to watch!! On the last picture with the 2 girls standing up, I asked the boy on the ground "What in the world are you doing with your hands?" His answer...."I have NO idea!!"
The picture in the middle...at first they tried doing the standing up thing, too.....but they put the tallest person on the floor, while the two shortest people tried to reach across and connect hands like the 3rd picture!! I went over to them and said "You would put the tallest person on the floor!!"
The first picture was one of the funniest, but also most frustrating ones. They had 4 people...."But the recycling symbol only has 3 sides" they said!! I said "Be problem solvers and figure it out!!" Mean teacher! Not giving them a solution! So...after a little bit of frustration and "I don't know what to do" they finally figured out that if 2 people put their feet together, that could be the bottom! *LIGHTBULB CLICKED*
There actually was one other group....but we had a "negative nancy" that didn't want to interact with the other two members...therefore they do not get to become celebrities on Mrs. Burgess' blog like the rest of the class because they could not solve the problem!! Sad day!!
Can I please just ask this question?? If you are a teacher....how can you NOT enjoy your job?? I mean really?!! I get to watch the minds of children grow, even with the smallest activities, like the one above! When they FINALLY figured out the shape....they kept saying "CAN WE MAKE ANOTHER ONE???" Sure! Go ahead! It was such a small project that made their minds work and solve small problems! When they clicked...they didnt' want to stop! Worksheets??.....not in this classroom!!!! :)
After this activity, they had to create their own recycling symbol. They had to make it meaningful (it couldn't just be a circle) and make it related to recycling. They did not like this at first, because they said it was too hard!! After some ideas were thrown out there by their classmates, the creativity started flowing! I will share pictures when they finish them all!
This post is being linked up with Teaching Madness Friday Flashback Linky Party!!
Thanks for linking up, Allison! I love the recycling symbol activity! It is so much fun to watch them collaborate to solve problems! :)
