Can I Get an AMEN??!!

This week is OVER!!!

Let's recap......

Monday....work until 4:00. Arbonne party at Julies at 6:30.  Slight hold up before the party when the dog (CHIPPER) decided he did NOT want to use the bathroom, but instead play with the neighbors dog.  Had to take him for a walk to get him to go so I could put him back in his crate to go to the party...which I was 30 minutes late for!!

Tuesday.....work until 3:00....Girls on the Run until 4:30.....not that bad of a day!

Wednesday....work until 3:00....staff meeting until 3:45.....stayed at work to actually get stuff done until 5:30...didn't get home until 7:00 because of traffic!

Thursday....work until 3:00....Girls on the Run until 4:45 (forgot my clothes!!)......helped mom with our FANTASTIC bulletin board she created until 5:15....and home!

Friday.....work until 3:00....went home due to a splitting headache and belly ache.....hour and a half nap!!!

Holy...Shamoly!!

Friday night was MUCH needed with great friends! Wonderful stress release!!

So back up to Thursday, where I mentioned a bulletin board.  Third grade entered into a contest with the Charlotte Fire Deparment.  We were to create a bulletin board that showed 2 ways out of a burning house.  We entered...then did not do anything with it! So....who comes to the rescue??? That fantastic mother I have bragged about before!! She took it and RAN with it! She came up with a bulletin board inspired by the nursery rhyme Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home.  If you are like me, you had never heard it before....but it is a pretty upsetting nursery rhyme!

Here is a picture of that bulleting board.  It is huge, so this is only part of it.

She made a house out of science display boards with an upstairs and downstairs.  One way out is to crawl on the floor.  the second way out is down a ladder from upstairs through the window.  The kids made little ladybugs (which my mom took the time to create a template for....WOW!) and they are showing the 2 ways out of the house.

On the right and left of this house, our kids made origami houses.  Inside the houses they gave a piece of advice to ladybug for what she needs to do since her house in on fire!! They turned out so cute!!

A little special touch my mom put on the house was made the bedroom Mickey Mouse.  My coworker/friend, Julie, has a super cute daughter named Lily! Julie LOVES Disney, so my mom wrote Lily's name on the bed as a special, personal touch! "Awwww!!!"

Go ahead....be jealous because my mom is freaking awesome!! Don't hate!! I told her she should start a business of creating bulletin boards, because there are TONS of teachers out there that would KILL to have someone come in and do their bulletin boards for them! Who has time, along with paperwork, lesson plans, teaching, grading, teaching, fussing, teaching, meetings...and teaching???

So...hopefully next week I can get back in gear with my blog! I hardly had time to sit down and chill this week, so my blog was kind of left out!

Since it is the weekend (AMEN), and it was a crazy week, I am going to have some of my products on Teachers Pay Teachers on sale (15% off) from today until Monday, October 1st!  Go on over and check out the documents I have on sale!! Don't forget to leave feedback!

Picture Time!!

So our Flat Stanleys are about ready for take off to another country! We are awaiting arrival from a Stanley from South Korea and France!! We will be sending one to South Korea and possibly France, too! My kids are SO excited!! Below are the pictures of their Stanley creations, along with a letter to students in France.  They even wrote a couple sentences in France.  Let me tell you....listening to a bunch of children trying to speak a foreign language is HILARIOUS!!!  Anyways....check out their creations! They are quite creative!
 Army Stanley

 Little stanley

 Skelly the Skeleton Stanley

Cheerleader Stanley

I can't quite remember what he called his!

We will be sending our Stanley people to France and South Korea this week! They are SOO excited about this project, and so am I!! I will update you when we have our foreign Stanleys!!

Happy Wednesday, tomorrow!!! :)

Global Awareness...and a Little Soap Box Action!!

So the other day I introduced my students to The Flat Stanley Project.  For those of you who don't know what that is, it is a "pen pal" type of project using the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown.

Once you read the book to your kiddos, the students create their own "Flat Stanley" character.  Once those are created, you log on to the "Flat Stanley Project" website and locate another class anywhere in the world that is participating in the project as well.  You then get in touch with one of those classes and you mail you "Flat Stanley" characters to them, and they mail theirs to you!! Once you receive them, you take pictures of their character at your school and in all kinds of locations around your hometown, and send those pictures back to your "pen pal."  It is a great global awareness activity, and helps kids interact with students from all over the world!! Check it out here:

My class will be participating in this project with a group of students from Paris, France!! How cool is that???? I told my class, and so many of the girls were like "OH MY GOSH!! PARIS, FRANCE!!!!" (enter French music).  I am so excited about this opportunity! We should be receiving their Stanleys soon, and we will ship ours soon, too!! We also have been in contact with a group from South Korea, but we haven't received their mailing address yet! We learned how to say hello and yes in Korean today!! That was a funny experience!!  I will put photos on here of my classes Stanleys as they finish! We have cheerleader Stanley, superhero Stanley, skateboarding Stanley, and more!!!

Alright....soap box time!!! This activity really got me thinking about how we teach!  I was trying to think of ways to tie in France and South Korea into my lessons each day to help my students get more of a cultural experience from this project than just receiving the Stanleys.  What better way to do that than units???  Right now it seems our teaching is so chopped up and non-relateable! We wonder why so many of our students get lost and confused with stuff, but it is because we teach something and then move on! There is not a real connection with what we are teaching!!  I see all these fantastic teacher blogs with teachers who are doing these awesome units and incorporating their non-negotiable curriculum into that unit!! It seems like we are so pushed to teach from a pacing guide and to get through everything so that our kids can...."pass the end of grade test."  Yes, our students are third graders and do take that test, but why can't they get the fun units and integrated curriculum like so many other grades do?? Do they not deserve to have fun at school?  I do believe the common core is helping to move towards an easier curriculum to work with, but I still feel that push to "get through everything" before the end of the year.

End of soap box...

So, I think I am going to try to do a unit of study using the countries that we are partnering up with for the Flat Stanley Project.  Today when I taught my kids the two simple phrases in Korean, they thought it was the coolest thing EVER! They were even saying it to the lunch line ladies, who were giving them funny looks! The Korean word for yes is "neh" which is very similar to "no." So when the lunch lady said "would you like rice?" and one of my students said "neh" she was confused! I found it humerous!! :) If I can get them that excited about learning two small words in another language, think of the excitement that is possible!! We will see how it goes!!

Happy Wednesday night, and Happy Thursday morning tomorrow!!

Linkin it Up...Behavior Management

I am linking up with What the Teacher Wants linky party about behavior management in my classroom.

In my classroom, I stray away from the whole color clip chart thing.  I did it my first year of teaching,   but found that it wasnt being used because of positive reinforcements that were given to avoid the behaviors that resort to a clip change.  I 100% agree with A Teeny Tiny Teacher and her post on not using the clip chart. You should go check it out!!

So what do I do instead of using a clip chart? I pass out "chips" to my students for good behavior.  I use the little red and yellow math counters so i dont have to buy anything.

Now, my students have to work hard for their chips.  It isnt just "Oh...Little Johnny walked correctly. He gets a chip." My students have to go above and beyond to receive chips....and they do!! You say chip, and they bend over backwards to get one!! Chips can be taken away, as well for incorrect behavior.

On Fridays, they add up their chips and turn them in for the class store.  I have 4 boxes (5 chips, 2 10 chip boxes, and 15 box).  I do need to revamp my store a little because it needs restocking, but they love it.  I am also using an idea from A Teeny Tiny Teacher.  It is a Fun Friday chart.  The kids turn in their  chips.  Whoever earned the most chips gets to choose first from different activities in the room (whiteboards, computers, boardgames--educational, etc.).  Students who had less chips can still choose, but wont get the same options as the first people.  A "ticket data sheet" is sent home on Fridays to parents letting them know how many chips were earned, and how their behavior was (again...thank you to A Teeny Tiny Teacher for the fabulous idea)!!

One thing I do in the hallway is tell my class I am watching one person.  If that one person does what they are supposed to, they get 5 chips and the rest of the class gets 3 each.  If that one person does not do what they are supposed to, they get nothing!!  My line has never been so straight!!

That is my overall behavior management.  I do other little things like team points (the winner chooses from the mystery envelope...enter scary music.....), spell out a reward (whole class receives a letter for good behavior.  Once the word is spelled out, they all get the reward), and overall just positive compliments and reinforcement.  So far....knock on wood.....this all has worked well.  No clip chart in  room 102!!!!

Bragging Rights!!

Have you ever been so proud of something that you just want to brag about it??? YES!! There are a couple things I want to brag about today....so like I told my husband....prepare for extreme excitement!! :)

First of all......today we learned "How to Choose a Partner" for Read-to-Someone!! I was scared....not gonna lie....but a wise person once told me that I have to just let my fears go and see what happens!! It....was....MAGIC!! Honestly, my kids read to someone for about 20 minutes, and they could have kept going if we didn't have to move on to writing time! I was so stinkin proud!! They gave me high hopes for this Daily Five stuff (again....been a little nervous about the whole choice thing...little bit of a control issue I have. I'm working on it!!). It was the perfect noise level, everyone was reading, I saw partners asking questions to each other, and they were ACTUALLY reading! I had to snap some pictures to hold on to the moment, because with kids, sometimes you never know what might come next! Check out my kiddos showing off their Read-To-Someone skills!!

AAAmazing!!! :)

Second bragging time....is actually on a different group from my school! Our 5th graders went on to the morning announcements this morning and introduced a rap that they created about IPICK for Daily Five! They had a contest, and the teachers class who won got to share theirs on the announcements!! It was really cool! Even my kids were singing it after the announcements went off! So...SHOUT OUT TO 5th GRADE TEAM AT STEELE CREEK!!!

Last thing....we started our Girls on the Run team today! I am so excited about it! I think it is an awesome program to help keep girls feeling good about themselves and how they treat others! We had...wait for it, wait for it....18 girls show up today!! That is an awesome turn out, especially for our school because of the payment part of it! We actually have to have 2 teams because we ended up with more than one team is allowed to have! We did our first lesson today, and it was awesome to see a group of young girls working together and smiling!! So...SHOUT OUT TO GIRLS ON THE RUN COACHES FOR A GREAT FIRST DAY!! :)

Did I have a good day today?? I think so!!

On a COMPLETELY off topic note....does anyone elses dog enjoy sleeping under the bed at night???

I mean, really?? :)

Happy Hump Day tomorrow!!

Spelling or Vocabulary....that is the question!!

Alright experts!! I need your opinions!! I teach third grade, and I am going back and forth between giving spelling words or vocabulary for homework. My overall opinion on homework is read and call it a day...but that's another topic and day!!

What is your opinion?? Do you think that third graders need spelling words or vocabulary words as a main focus for homework??  And should they use these words in Daily 5, or have two separate lists??

Aaaaannnnndddd........GO!!! :)

What are these kids doing???

 Making shapes??????

Sleeping???

Building a tower?????

What are these kids doing??? The answer...building the recycling symbol using only their bodies!! We have been learning about recycling the past couple of days, so I decided to just do a quick fun activity with building the recycling symbol.  Let me tell you.....it was HILARIOUS to watch!! On the last picture with the 2 girls standing up, I asked the boy on the ground "What in the world are you doing with your hands?" His answer...."I have NO idea!!"

The picture in the middle...at first they tried doing the standing up thing, too.....but they put the tallest person on the floor, while the two shortest people tried to reach across and connect hands like the 3rd picture!! I went over to them and said "You would put the tallest person on the floor!!"

The first picture was one of the funniest, but also most frustrating ones.  They had 4 people...."But the recycling symbol only has 3 sides" they said!! I said "Be problem solvers and figure it out!!" Mean teacher! Not giving them a solution! So...after a little bit of frustration and "I don't know what to do" they finally figured out that if 2 people put their feet together, that could be the bottom! *LIGHTBULB CLICKED*

There actually was one other group....but we had a "negative nancy" that didn't want to interact with the other two members...therefore they do not get to become celebrities on Mrs. Burgess' blog like the rest of the class because they could not solve the problem!! Sad day!!

Can I please just ask this question?? If you are a teacher....how can you NOT enjoy your job?? I mean really?!! I get to watch the minds of children grow, even with the smallest activities, like the one above! When they FINALLY figured out the shape....they kept saying "CAN WE MAKE ANOTHER ONE???" Sure! Go ahead! It was such a small project that made their minds work and solve small problems! When they clicked...they didnt' want to stop! Worksheets??.....not in this classroom!!!! :)

After this activity, they had to create their own recycling symbol. They had to make it meaningful (it couldn't just be a circle) and make it related to recycling. They did not like this at first, because they said it was too hard!! After some ideas were thrown out there by their classmates, the creativity started flowing!  I will share pictures when they finish them all!

This post is being linked up with Teaching Madness Friday Flashback Linky Party!!

When things start to "CLICK"...

Today was the day that I can say my kids and I have officially "clicked" with each other! This was probably the first day where I truly felt that my kids get me, and I get them! They have impressed me beyond measure with how well they do on certain tasks, even my "lower" students! I'm excited about where we will go with the rest of the year, and how we will grow as a class family!! I do still have a strong bond with my students from the past 2 years (I looped with my students from my first year of teaching to my second year...so we grew very close!), but I feel that my new kiddos and I are going to create a strong bond, as well!!

Keepin it short and sweet tonight!! I think it's time for a nap before going to bed!

Little bit of this....and that...

Here is the "this"......

We finished our birdhouses today....and my mom (aka celebrity to my kids) came in to glue them together. They turned out SOOO cute!! Take a look at the end products!! They will be hung up outside, and their letters mailed hopefullly tomorrow!

This birdhouse theme was racecars!

Another racecare theme!!

This birdhouse theme was animals...I think...

AND....the story of my little church boy!! His group wanted to do animals....but he wanted to do CHURCH!! Part of me was like YES!! The other part was....hmm....where is this going to take the conversation??? So...one girl said "I don't go to church".  This then led to..."you mean you don't go to church or read the Bible??!!"  "Yes, I read the Bible, I just don't go to church!!"  "Well, you should go to church!!" "I just don't go...my mom doesn't make me..." After being turned towards a new conversation by me, the group decided on animals.  My little church boy insisted on keeping church as part of the theme....hince the 3 crosses on the roof..WITH birds resting all around them! I guess I couldn't argue too much because he did still include animals! Oh the stories of an elementary teacher!

Now for the "that"........

We played my Subtraction Action BINGO today and the kids LOVED it!! It was awesome seeing the differentiation with the game boards in action (subtraction action....to be exact...), as well as hearing "YES!!! I GOT THE ANSWER RIGHT!!!!" Take a look at some pictures I snapped of my kiddos playing!!!

They really enjoyed this game...so it will definitely go into my continuously used games!!

Tomorrow is "hump day" AKA Wednesday!! Almost to the weekend! :) Have a great rest of the week!

Habitat for Humanity....

I want to share a project my class did last week, and is finishing up this week!!  Part of our FANTASTIC social studies curriculum (*sarcasm*) is being a responsible citzen.  In our social studies  books, there is a small section about Habitat for Humanity and volunteering.  I really wanted to do something with volunteering and HFH, but couldnt figure out how since my kids cant actually go out and build a houses....so....one of my team members (shout out to Phillips) came up with an idea to build birdhouses as a "symbol" of HFH!! I loved this idea....so took it and ran with it.

The next part was trying to figure out how to let 17 third graders build birdhouses without placing in their hands screwdrivers, hammers, and nails!!! Please imagine the scene...........

So...once again....I went to my creative mother and asked for some suggestions.  Of course, being the mom that she is....she was right on it, trying to figure out some way to let my students build birdhouses.  She found at Wal-Mart these birdhouse kits that were six pieces that were supposed to be painted, and then assembled together.  I LOVED the idea...so she kindly bought me three kits!! Gotta love a supportive momma!!

When I told my kids what we were doing, their faces were priceless.  You would have thought I said "you are going to build a giant mansion for the President himself to live in!!!" They were so excited, and asked over and over until it was....TIME!!!

Enough with my story....and on to the actual activity!!

Each group (3) had to come up with a theme for their birdhouse (another blog entry on the conversation one group had about making their theme church...but having one student who "doesnt go to church!!) Their birdhouse had to focus around that theme!  Each student got a piece of their groups birdhouse they got to paint.  After painting, they are going to be assembled and hung around the school as a symbol of Habitat for Humanity  (in this case...humanity for the birds!!)

The second part of this project...I am super excited about....my students wrote a letter to HFH explaining why they agree with what HFH does! Their letters turned out AWESOME!! One student said...and I quote...."we are building birdhouses for our school because we learned a lesson from you about how we should treat others!!" I was impressed...you should be to!! We are going to take pictures of our completed houses and send them off to HFH!! I cant wait!!

So there is our recent project!! That wonderful momma I bragged about earlier is coming in tomorrow to help assemble the houses! I will take pictures and post them as soon as  they are complete!!

What has been your favorite social studies project you have done with your  class??

**This was a long one...so thanks for reading!!!**

Subtraction Action...

We have been reviewing additin the first 2 weeks of school, and now we are going to move into subtraction.  I was trying hard to think of something interactive my students could do with subtraction because we played an addition card game last week, and you could have heard a pen drop!!! Which with this group, THAT is impressive!  So I came up with a subtraction BINGO game.  I saw some other ones online, but I wanted to create my own that I could differentiate to meet my students' needs.  Thus...the birth of Subtraction Action BINGO!!

If you are interested in purchasing your own copy of this document, click on the TpT link below and pick it up!!

T.G.I.F

Today was much better...ending it with a small visit from 2 of my sweeties from last year helping me out in my classroom! Sometimes all it takes is a sweet little hug and a cute little smile from a child to make things better!!

I wanted to share one of my first novel units I made! After looking at a couple of units made by other fantastic teachers, I decided to make my  own.  My favorite of the two I have made is a Horrible Harry unit.  I was so proud after making it and putting it on TPT.  It is just one of the coolest things to see something you worked hard on come to life....and then even be bought by other teachers! Right now, I have it on sale from its original price! Go check it out, and even purchase a download if you are interested!! It will be on sale for the weekend...along with my other unit for the novel Fish Face by Patricia Reilly Giff!!!

Please let me know what you think about the units so I can go about making more that will benefit other teachers!

Have a ch.ch.ch.....Faaaaantaastic weekend!!!

Holy Moly...

Very stressful afternoon!! That's about the extent of my feelings right now! One of those days that makes teaching a little difficult due to the "extra responsibilities" that go along with feeling the minds of children!! Thank God for trustworthy friends at work, my loving hubby, and my mom for being a listening ear and a wonderful support system!!

The best part of my day today.....getting this awesome note from a coworker/friend that read:

Burgess,

You rock!! (which was accompanied by a crystal rock!!)

She must have had a feeling that this afternoon was going to be difficult! Fully believes that God places people in our lives for a reason!!! Anzaldi....yea I'm calling you out.....you rock, too!!!!!! :) Thanks!

Ready for a new day tomorrow...AND....IT'S FRIDAY!!

Happy Friday Eve everyone!

Inside Room 102

One of my most favorite things to do with teaching is set up my room at the beginning of the year.  My mom always comes in and helps me come up with different ideas of how to make my classroom a place where my students will feel comfortable and eager to learn!

I wanted to share a few pictures of my favorite places in my room.  Several of them are Pinterest inspired, and some are originals! :)

Group "workstations".  Each group has their own plastic drawers that holds math manipulatives, scissors, writing notebooks, and dictionaries!  This is my first year trying these, and so far so good! On top of each drawer is a "Tidy Trash Tub" (labels created, found, and provided by Rowdy in Room 300)!! My students have done a great job keeping our floors cleaned thanks to those wonderful tubs!!

This is my classroom library! My books are organized by guided reading levels, and by interests.

My Twitter board.  This is a Pinterest inspired board.  My students came up with their own Twitter names, and they respond to opinion based questions each week! Pinterest Version: Twitter

My STAMINA tracking board for Daily 5! The Ipod and guitar were another Pinterst inspired project, however the stamina tracking was added by myself. My students are currently at 20 minutes of sustained silent reading! :) Here is the Pinterest version: Ipod and Guitar

"Look Who's Poppin In to 3rd Grade!!" This is on my front door with my students' names on the pieces of popcorn!

Classroom Responsibility chart.  Each student chooses a new job every 2 weeks, and places these camera magnets under their number!

This is one of my favorite boards! "Where are We Traveling Today?"  We read a current event (found on the website Dogonews.com) every Friday (sometimes every other Friday).  We locate the location of the current event on the map and place a thumbtack as our tracker!  The students respond to the current event by answering a question related to the article, and draw a picture to go with it! This particular week was The World's Steepest RollerCoaster located in Japan! Their question: Would you or would you not ride the worlds steepest roller coaster?

So there is a little insight into my classroom.  I have to admit that I love my classroom! It feels welcoming and warm, which helps make going to work even easier!

I hope you enjoyed a little insight into my daily surroundings!

Daily Five

So  this year my school has decided to take on The Daily Five.  So far I am impressed with how well my students can actually sit and read for an extended period of time.  I also love that they know the word stamina and actually use it in conversation.  We are currently working on the first 25 days since this is the first time my kids have seen or done Daily Five.

There is one place I am struggling tremendously.  That is the Word Work part of the program.  I have scanned around on blogs and have seen some great ideas, but most of them have been things that I am sure third graders would enjoy, but I don't know how beneficial they would be to third graders. I am trying to find some activities that would not be too difficult to keep out so students can just grab and go when at this station.

If you have any suggestions on Word Work, please help me out! I have asked around at school, and it seems to be a common struggle.  Younger grades teachers say plato, stamping, magnets, etc.  Upper grades say Im not sure!

We will be getting into Word Work next week, so I am in  the home stretch.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I hope everyone had a great day back to school after Labor Day.

Here goes nothing....

Here goes nothing! I am going to try this blogging world out and see how it goes.  I love reading teacher blogs and seeing what other teachers have to share with me, so now I am going to give it a shot and see what I can share with other teachers, too.

Since I am just getting started, I am keeping it simple for now.  I have been teaching for 2 years, with just now starting my third year.  I teach in Charlotte, North Carolina.  I student taught at the same school as The Schroeder Page blogging guru, and have been so inspired by some of the awesome ideas that have been shared by her!

Eventually I would like to put my own products on here, but for now, like I said, I am keeping it simple.  I do have a Teachers Pay Teachers page with 12 of my products already listed, so check it out if you get a chance!

I look forward to this blogging journey and hope I am able to inspire others the way that tons of bloggers have already inspired me!
